Mono Lake Pastel
Mono Lake is a hypersaline lake in the Eastern Sierra, close to Lee Vining. I have visited it several times over the past decades to shoot the famous tufa towers and see its water levels slowly rise again. In 2009, I went back to the lake and captured this scene when, for a brief moment after sunset, the sky turned into almost unreal shades of pink and magenta which were reflected in the shallow waters.

Yellow Aspen
Fall is my favorite season and every year I try to take at least one trip to see the changing colors. The best colors in "our area" can be found in the Eastern Sierra. For those, who do not live over there, timing a photo trip is a real challenge though: cold weather is important to turn the leaves but early winter storms can lower the “granite curtain” quite suddenly and make access to the Eastern slopes (or passage back to the Bay Area) impossible or treacherous at the very least. Plus, Aspen trees do not peak for more than a few days and strong winds can easily knock down foliage and leave whole groves bare. However, when the stars align, a fall trip to the Sierra can be really magical!
