The Pacific Northwest is one of my favorite areas in North America. It boasts a large number of picturesque villages, lighthouses, magnificent beaches, state parks, rivers and lakes, glorious mountains and an interesting area called the Olympic Peninsula with its similarly named national park. The park is home to several temperate rainforests whose annual precipitation ranges from 140 to 170 inches! Ferns, mosses and lichen blanket most surfaces, giving the lush green forest an enchanted - almost outerworldly - look. It is a great place to photograph despite the humidity. This shot shows moss and ferns covering a big-leaf maple (acer macrophyllum) tree in the Hoh rainforest.

The Olympic National Park in Washington feels like three parks in one. Here you will find wild beaches covered with driftwood, several temperate rain forests, and glacier-capped peaks. A great place to view the Olympic mountain range is Hurricane Ridge. In summer, the alpine meadows are covered with wildflowers which attract blacktail deer and Roosevelt elk. However, it seemed this particular animal was more interested in the photographer than views and flowers...
