In July 2011, during our return trip from the Pacific Northwest, I was fortunate enough to witness a very special and unusual scene: a mother gray whale and her calf swimming in the Klamath River. Over the years, I have been on many whale watching trips out of California and Hawaii, yet I had never been able to see these beautiful animals so clearly, let alone observe their behaviors, their swimming and breathing patterns, or witness the inaudible but obvious communication between mother and calf, as I did on this memorable day. Sometimes you can plan great photographic moments. But sometimes coincidence paired with the willingness to discard a plan or schedule and be open to whatever may come is what opens the door to opportunity.
